During the middle of winter the only way in and out of Zanskar is along the frozen Zanskar River. That’s why the trek is called Chadur Trek (Chadur means blanket). The route is possible only when the river is at its coldest, for about six weeks during January and February.

You see the beautiful view of frozen river and mountains covered by the snow. It is a rare experience to see the hard live of the people in winter time when the temperature drops to 25 degree below zero. It is not possible to use horses but the porters are used to this conditions.

From Leh you take the jeep to reach the village Chiling 3.250 m (10.660 ft). From Chilling you follow the frozen Zanskar River for a few days to Hanumil 3.480 m (11.410 ft).

From Hanumil you trek to Padum (3.550 m) via Pishu (3.450 m) and Karsha (3.600 m).

Karsha is the place to visit the monastery from the 15th century. For that you have to climb the hillside. But it is well worth the effort, particularly for the view to the Great Himalaya range which you are unable to appreciate from Padum. Padum is situated in the beautiful central Zanskar plain surrounded by stunning mountains. Rest one day in Padum and visit the monastery.
